  • What is the XFL?

With ads rolling for the XFL, you may be wondering what exactly the XFL is. The XFL is a spring football league kicking off in 2023. However, this iteration of the XFL is the third. The XFL existed two other times – first, in 2000, with comical WWE-like elements. This makes sense as it was…

XFL Select is your home for content on the spring football league, founded in 2000 but restarting twice since then. The latest iteration of the XFL is starting in February 2023, led by investor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The teams in the new XFL, known colloquially as XFL 3.0, are the Orlando Guardians, the Vegas Vipers, the St. Louis Battlehawks, the San Antonio Brahmas, the Houston Roughnecks, the DC Defenders, the Seattle Sea Dragons and the Arlington Renegades. These are mostly the same as XFL 2.0, except the New York Guardians, Tampa Bay Vipers and Dallas Renegades were in different cities and the Los Angeles Wildcats were a team instead of the Brahmas. The Brahmas are names o because it was The Rock’s wrestling nickname.

The XFL is a professional American football league that has existed twice, with the first iteration playing one season in 2001 and the second relaunching in 2020. The original XFL was founded by Vince McMahon of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and NBC and aimed to offer a more radical, in-your-face style of football, with rule changes and a focus on player personalities. However, the league was criticized for its low-quality play and controversial decisions, leading to low ratings and its eventual folding. The 2020 reboot attempted to offer a unique brand of football, with changes to traditional rules, player safety improvements, and a faster-paced game. Despite initial interest, the league faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was suspended in 2021.
