College Football is a sport where brands matter. Some teams get more of a spotlight just because they have more fans or revenue and thus capture a bigger spot on the airwaves. This sometimes poses a benefit to the teams that work in silence, so they can shock their big time opponents in an upset. That being said – how is Kansas State still one of these teams?
The post-Snyder era at Kansas State has been an interesting one. It had its rocky moment for sure, but it seems they really found their guy in Klieman. Furthermore, the 2022 season should have absolutely silenced any doubters. Here’s a short list of what K State accomplished in 2022:
- 10-4 Record
- Upset #6 Oklahoma in their house
- Demolished #9 Oklahoma State, 48-0
- Big 12 Champion over #3 TCU (The playoff team that would go on to upset Michigan)
- Not entirely blown out by Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, 45-20
And yet, entering this season with the 35th best recruiting class on top of the existing roster (albeit a mediocre 76th in Returning Production), Kansas State was a mere #16 in the AP Poll. Sure, that’s high enough, you may say. But that’s exactly the point – when will we stop considering dead in the middle of the Top 25 “high enough” for a proven, talented Kansas State team? Where is the evidence that Kansas State isn’t directly contending with Texas for the Big 12 Title? Kansas State is currently 3rd in sportsbook odds to win the Big 12, with almost half the odds of Oklahoma. Where’s the evidence for that?
Some of this may sound like the ravings of a lunatic, but it’s easy to feel that way when it seems like no one else is seeing what you’re seeing. What will it take for the media to take Kansas State seriously? We’ll check back in next week and see, should they blow out Mizzou, if they even make the front page of ESPN.
