College Football Fan Maps have been created in a variety of ways, whether from Twitter hashtag data, team geography and attendance or otherwise. We set out to make a College Football Fan Map in our favorite way possible – using responses from our loyal fans. Rival Territory:
Three teams were successfully ranked as the top team in their rival’s home state. Boise State was a top response from Colorado (Rival: Air Force), WVU was a top response from Pennsylvania (Rival: Pitt) and Minnesota was the top response from Wisconsin (Rival: Wisconsin).
Crossing Borders:
Many teams successfully “invaded” a neighboring state and ranked as the top team there. These teams include Marshall (a top fanbase in Ohio), WVU (a top fanbase in Pennsylvania), Virginia Tech (a top fanbase in Maryland) and Minnesota (a top fanbase in Wisconsin). A few teams even did this without being the top fanbase in their own state, like Mississippi State (a top fanbase in Tennessee), Maryland (a top fanbase in DC), and Oregon State (a top fanbase in Washington).
Hail Mary:
Perhaps the most impressive are teams that were the top fanbase nowhere near their home state. The longest distance fanbase takeovers were Georgia Southern in Alaska (we wonder if this is really true), NC State in South Dakota, Texas in North Dakota, SMU in California, Stanford in Indiana, USC in New York and BYU in New Hampshire!
