FBS Football understandably gets more attention, but some of the real gems of the College Football world live at the FCS level. If you ignore this level of football, you’re missing out on some of the best rivalries, traditions and stadiums that College Football has to offer. Below, we recount the best college football gameday experiences at the FCS level.

Idaho

Steed yourself for a Vandal gameday unlike any other in the FCS. At the iconic Kibbie Dome, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of Vandal Gold, a passionate fanbase known for their unwavering support. If you’re lucky enough to visit on Homecoming weekend, you’ll see the students form a serpentine line across campus the night before the big game that leads all the way to the high-stacked bonfire. Then, a pregame pep rally is led by Idaho’s boisterous Sound of Idaho marching band. A rivalry game against Idaho State is a can’t-miss event. Soak up the rich history – Idaho is one of the winningest programs in the Big Sky Conference, making every game feel like a potential chapter in their gridiron legacy.

North Dakota State

In Fargo, North Dakota, immerse yourself in Bison football’s legendary atmosphere. The Fargodome, erupts with the “Go Bison!” chant as the rabid fanbase creates an electric atmosphere. North Dakota State is known for one of the rowdiest tailgate scenes in the FCS, so be sure to hit it. The rallying power of this fanbase is especially impressive given the freezing temps these home games can hit – so bundle up! If the gameday alone doesn’t feel significant to you, remember that North Dakota State has the most national championships in the FCS!

South Dakota State

Witness Jackrabbit fever firsthand on gameday at South Dakota State. The energetic Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, pulsates with the thunderous Jackrabbit loyal. Be sure to bring your cowbell, one of the hallmarks of the SDSU fanbase. South Dakota State has a stellar on-field product as well, winning the national championship in both 2023 and 2023. Who knows, they may soon catch up to rivals North Dakota State in the next decade or two!

Florida A&M

HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) are known for having the most loyal fan and the best bands in the land. Florida A&M is no exception, in fact it’s the crown jewel of HBCU gameday experiences. Bragg Stadium rocks with the infectious sounds of the world-famous “Marching 100” band, creating a high-energy spectacle unlike any other in FCS. If you’re lucky enough, catch the “Florida Classic” rivalry game against Bethune-Cookman in which two of the most die hard fanbases in all of college football (and two of the most historic HBCU’s) face off. Embrace becoming part of a passionate Rattler community, known for their infectious enthusiasm and unwavering support for their team.

Montana

Dive into the heart of Montana football on gameday and experience history firsthand. The “Griz Walk” tradition sees fans lining up alongside the “Pride of the Mountains” marching band to cheer on the players before kickoff. At Washington-Grizzly Stadium, nicknamed “The Griz”, you’ll be part of a legacy – it’s one of the most attended FCS venues, consistently packing in more fans than some FBS programs. And don’t forget to watch for the iconic #37 jersey, a symbol of Montana grit and toughness, raised high during pre-game. Plus, enjoy one of the best stadium views in College Football!
